First state - You can possibly see the remnants of the painting beneath it. That other image was a disaster, so I slopped some light paint over it, inverted the board and got my mirror. Self-portraiture is an unpleasant, but often necessary exercise for practice.

Second state - Developing stuff here, it's just so hard to see with the bad photo, sorry!

The third state is what's above. Took about a week between each one.

Thanks to last minute word heads-up from my friend Mike, I heard about this local music/sketch event in time to attend. There were four guys on a little stage playing traditional Irish music, rollicking stuff - really quite excellent. I didn't manage to draw all four unfortunately. I tried to warm up by sketching a mug sitting nearby and then got down to it. The time seemed to fly; right when I was starting to loosen up and felt most comfortable drawing, then the whole thing was over(!) You can probably tell the order too: bottom left (mug), bottom right (Sean), top left (Dylan), top right (Dan).

I didn't catch everybody's full name, but the guy top right is Dan Gurney; his dad was in the audience. I would've drawn him too, but didn't have a good view - or so I thought; he drew me! He was incredibly nice, both interesting and interested.

When I'm bored, typically during the life drawing sessions after I've drawn a couple sketches and am no longer inspired to do more from the model, I'll doodle up alphabets and letterforms. Sometimes students are playing music in the rest of the studio space and I'll just draw out a phrase or verse that I'm hearing in the lyrics or whatever is said in conversation.

1. "Coconino Moon" - Named for the way George Herriman always drew the moon in the old Krazy Kat comics.

2. "Woog"

3. "Lauderdale"

4. "Hooksie" - I was thinking of Earthworm Jim.

5. "Ploog" - Not the random name it might seem, but named for Mike Ploog, who did all the design (though clearly after Vaughn Bodé) and such for Ralph Bakshi's esoteric animated opus Wizards (1977). See it, if you don't know what I'm talking about. Anyway, I had this on my mind at the time.

Drawing letters is fun because they totally have their own gesture, but they aren't real objects, so you don't have to really worry about exactitude or whatever; they are already abstractions. There is enough of a constraint to force creative problem-solving, but open enough as subjects to allow for stress-free, exploratory mark making.

And here's a little random test of the Lauderdale letters as actual type.

"The Questing Beast"

The questing beast is a creature from Arthurian mythology. I'm currently reading Le Morte D'Arthur, and just finished the passage featuring this creature.

The description in the text is extremely vague, however there are other versions of the tale that give more visual cues. From these, it seems to be a typical case of fanciful elaborations of real-world animals, in this case: the giraffe (also known as the "cameleopard" in Medieval times).

The questing beast is described as having the head and neck of a serpent, the body of a leopard, the haunches of a lion and the feet of a hart. Which would make sense if you were trying to explain what a "giraffe" was to the folks back in Europe.

The name itself comes from the description common to all versions of Arthurian legend, which describe the creature as constantly emitting a noise like of a pack of hunting ("questing") dogs. So.. fill a giraffe full of yelping beagles and foxhounds, and there you go.

It appears after Arthur has a troubling dream about the fall of his Kingdom at the hands of his incestuously conceived son, and so the questing beast is thought to be a bad omen: a symbol of incest and its negative consequences.

Ironclaw: A Bestiary

A depiction of the mythological steed from Islam, renowned for carrying the prophet Muhammad around the Holy Land and on up to Heaven, way back in the day.

Abraham apparently also had a ride.

It's supposedly a kind of flying donkey with a human head, how cool is that?(!)
I just made the above picture, but it's not new imagery for me.

Later, in 2005, when taking my intro digital class, I felt the class was too basic and challenged myself to try more digital painting on my own. This was one of my first real efforts:

I didn't get very far though; my ambition often outstrips my abilities with new mediums/techniques. I particularly like the "baked potato" he ends up standing on :B

Of course now the Illustration department offers an advanced digital painting class, specifically :)

P.S. Across his chest it reads "Love and Peace" in Arabic. The mask/antlers are also "Love" just mirrored left and right.

Ironclaw: A Bestiary by Chris Goodwin | Make Your Own Book

Earlier this year I finished a huge illustration project: creating images for use in the latest edition of the Ironclaw roleplaying game manual. The setting involves animal characters in a fantasy, pre-industrial European setting - from the Medieval period through the Renaissance to the early 1800's.

I was featured along with other artists in the book. And so, after it was done, I collected mine together to publish as a stand-alone portfolio / "Art of-" companion book, including my writings for each image. My process involved first writing something for each entry, and then basically illustrating this text.

Contains 41 full-color illustrations with accompanying text and commentary.
For those of you interested, the book is finished and available :)

I didn't make much fuss about the project here as I was working on it, I figured I'd just wait until now to point to it. The little preview widget above is cool, but might take some time to load all the thumbnails :P

I'm starting to think more about the setting. While the city of Bremen itself is someplace impossibly glamorous and unrealized like The Emerald City of Oz, or the aura around Hollywood/NYC in the late 70's, most of the road trip setting will be strip mall suburbia hell, or some kind of run down post-industrial urban blight mill towns.

Designs for the cat character. She's supposed to be a kind of lanky midwest tomboy/tomcat who wants out of her smothering, conservative, country upbringing and into the urbane tolerance she believes she'll find in the big city of Bremen. She also wants to rock out and nobody seems to understand that back home.

She's a sphynx cat, for those who aren't familiar. Which also contributes to why she doesn't feel like she fits in among her fluffier "prettier" peers.

My research into names shows that "miau" is German for the "meow" sound that cats make. "Miah" is a name that sounds close to this, and is also both a boy's and girl's name.

This was done as a kind of proof of concept. If I can't draw him singing the way I see it in my head, then all the design in the world won't help.

The dramatic close-up is mostly because I haven't worked out the rest of the band yet :P

I also figured out how I want to think about the wattle. I was concerned with it looking like some kind of spherical "scrotum" hanging off his face, but now I see that I can show the way they hang and move like "gauged earplugs", which is quite fitting :) Yay, process!"

A while ago I was doodling some initial concepts for illustrating the folktale of The Town Musicians of Bremen as recorded by The Brothers Grimm (my favorite story, as a child). I didn't get beyond these initial loose sketches, but I just now found them while looking through old sketchbooks. The donkey plays bass, the rooster sings, the cat is on guitar, and the dog is the drummer :)

I think I'll go through with it now, as it's still interesting to me to interpret the story.
I want to be better about my process for this, so there'll be stuff before the Stuff.
Here's a beginning, with character designs.

The rooster, Gerik, is the last to join the group on their way to the big city. I envision him as the washed up singer. Though not much older than the rest of the band, he is practically burned out on fast living and mild successes at an early age. He still manages to put his voice to work, though it was a sweeter sound long ago. As a veteran rocker, he's the one with the most performing experience and helps round out the group. During the design process, I learned that in German the "cock-a-doodle-doo" sound that roosters make translates to "kikeriki", and that the name "Gerik" (which has a similar feeling to my ear), is a version of the German name "Gerald" (which means "spear").

Notably, despite the title of the tale, the animals in the original story never do arrive to Bremen to make their fortune.

A quick post up, while I'm on campus.

I'm not used to working so large, especially compared to the other fish paintings, which are like almost five times smaller. This took a week to make. The last time I painted on canvas was over three years ago, and the time before that was four years earlier. It's not something I'm that familiar with. I would rather paint on a hard surface, than springy canvas. But it wasn't so bad, I guess. It's cheaper than wood panel!

Earlier this summer I sat out on the front porch with a mirror to make a self-portrait. It was extremely sunny, which accounts for the scowl as the light was directly in my face.

Halfway through it, I realized that I didn't like it and that I didn't actually want to be painting. So I started to slop paint over it. Then I stopped that because it seemed like a waste of paint.

I figured I should keep the surface because I'm poor and things to paint on with good surfaces are hard to come by. So I could always paint over it later.

I just now found it in my studio behind a chest of drawers where it had fallen. I don't know if I like it or not. When I look at it up close, there is stuff going on that I like but don't understand.

As far as I know, the meme originated here (in Japanese).

There is a blank translated to English here (on dA).

I set up the blank frame on it's own layer, locked it, and then worked the image underneath it.

So, when I was finished, I clicked off the frame and found this below.

I think I like it just as much, though the visual effect was unintentional.

It was hard to whittle down the pick, I limited myself to visual, drawn mediums (my list for fictional characters in general would be different (including books, live action movies, etc.)) and even so I couldn't get it down lower than eleven, not ten.

The cliche "to stub the rabbit's toe" refers not only to their large feet, but from the stereotype that all rabbits are related either by blood or by marriage, and that they are intensely loyal to family like a gang. To offend one of them is to offend all of them, at all levels of society; from nobles to ruffians, wet nurses to whalers.

Almost everyone has an anecdote about this: The stingy merchant short-changes a bunny bootblack on the way home. He arrives at his house within the hour to find it foreclosed upon by the rabbit bank manager. Or that travelling circus weasel who broke a local rabbit doe's heart and then later, several towns away, after eating a salad at a lapine establishment known for its fine produce, he is stricken by a case of food poisoning so severe that he looses all his teeth.

In truth, the degrees of separation between any two rabbits is not typically less than for any other species, but their renowned fecundity means that there are simply more of them, which leads to these kinds of coincidences.

To be safe, always tip your bunny.

The Ebony Horse was Kamar al-Akmar's mount.

I'm familiar with some of the other 1001 tales, but not this one, so I had to look it up. Here's the gist:

From the classic ur-anthology The Arabian Nights (1850), it is basically a clockwork horse made from ebony and decorated with gems and gold, etc. It can fly, and Kamar al-Akmar, Prince of Persia, rides it around on his adventures. It even carries him into space, near the sun. The horse is not presented as a magical creature, but a clever invented mechanism driven by wound keys and everything. It is ultimately destroyed at the end of the tale. As such, "The Ebony Horse" is an early example of science-fiction :)

The work is all in the public domain and easily found online.

The Saw-Horse was Jack Pumpkinhead's mount, and my favorite in this bunch :)

I didn't pay a cent for any of these things; all found objects. The action figures were each pulled off the street and were quite mangled. I think the legs belong to a chunky little Batman figure. I didn't recognize the figure that yielded the arms; it was some sort of goblin thing. An opened hairclip for the shoulders, and part of a ski boot buckle for the back. The collar piece was from a shattered foam dart gun.

I had a small bit of board that I drew onto with pencil, then scanned digitally to sort out the colors and lighting situation in Photoshop; color studies are a good habit to get into before starting on finishes.

You can see that it's flipped horizontally. I'll flip images while still in process to check for errors.

Using a mirror does the same trick, if you hold your picture up to a mirror as you are working on it from time to time, errors in composition or proportion will jump out at you. Your eyes get used to seeing something a certain way and you can become blind to mistakes that are obvious when reversed.

Two early concept sketches to show to client.

This is for another card in the online game I'm working on.
I was told to show "Justice" as some sort of knight in shiny armor.
These two I made quickly. When I get some client feedback, I'll
redraw it with more definition.

I've mentioned in other posts that these images are only going to
exist digitally in the game and will be about the size of the preview
images above. So the overall silhouette matters more than precision
rendering.

This was made as a test for a technique I want to get better at, as it will help me work more efficiently:

Initial pencil drawing on chipboard. Scanned in at high resolution.

Simply blocked in colors digitally with photoshop, preserved chipboard texture.

Printed out laser color copy and affixed to wood with lots of clear acrylic medium.

Finished the painting with gouache.

Digitally I only worried about the mid-range to darks, and I saved the mid-range to highlights for actual paint, since that tends to be about detail work anyway.

After the digital stage, the image is still flexible enough to be changed and incorporate client feedback. When that's good, I can then use that as the underwork for the painted finish.
